An upright deciduous tree with lance-shaped leaves, dark green above, blue green underneath turning yellow through to orange in autumn. Flat clusters of white flowers in late spring, are followed by large bunches of bright red fruit, attractive to birds in the early autumn. Grow in moderately fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Hardy and tolerant of urban pollution and coastal conditions. A native tree widespread in the UK
