Description
Liven up your dinner plate or salad bowl with a rainbow of tasty and nutritious stems, courtesy of colourful Swiss chard ‘Celebration’. This magnificent ornamental edible produces a reliable crop of large, vitamin-packed green leaves supported by tender stems in a mixture of vibrant colours. Sow successively and enjoy a summer long harvest, pick them young and enjoy them in salads, or leave them to mature and treat like spinach. Ideal for kitchen gardens and allotments, also an attractive feature in a patio container where the bright stems can be admired! Height: 50cm (20”). Spread: 40cm (16”).
Sowing
Direct sow Leaf Beet seed outdoors from March to August. Grow Swiss Chard in a well prepared, moist, fertile seedbed in full sun or partial shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (½”) in drills 30cm (12″) apart. Thin seedlings to 7cm (3″) apart for ‘baby leaves’ which will be ready to harvest approximately 50 days from sowing. For larger chards/leaves thin to 15cm (6″) apart, or 23cm (9″) for mature plants.
More Info
Water Swiss Chard regularly, particularly during dry periods to ensure that the soil remains moist. Harvest Leaf Beet regularly by selecting a few leaves from each plant to promote fresh growth and to extend the cropping season.
