Bunching onion ‘Performer’ produces upright, dark green leaves and mild flavoured stems which do not bulb. Use this perennial onion as a spring onion to add to salads or chopped as a chive-like garnish with a mild flavour. This winter hardy variety can be harvested virtually year round from successional sowings. Height: 30cm (12″). Spread: 23cm (9″). Companion planting: Try growing onions with mint to confuse and deter onion fly.
Direct sow onions outdoors in spring on any firm, well drained soil in full sun. Sow thinly at a depth of 1cm (1/2″) and a distance of 30cm (12″) between rows. Prepare the planting area several weeks in advance by incorporating some well rotted garden compost to improve drainage and soil fertility. Avoid planting onions on freshly manured soil. On particularly wet ground, try growing onions in raised beds. When large enough to handle, thin welsh onion seedlings to 23cm (9″) apart for medium sized bulbs, or at a slightly wider spacing if larger bulbs are required. Alternatively sow onion seed indoors in module trays at a depth of 1cm (1/2″), using free-draining, seed sowing compost. Place in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at a temperature of 10-15C (50-59F) until after germination which usually takes 10-14 days. Once germinated, grow onions on in cool conditions until all risk of frost has passed and they are large enough to plant outdoors at a distance of 23cm (9″) apart. Cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.
Welsh onions are undemanding and require only occasional watering during particularly dry periods. However, rows should be weeded regularly. Harvest individual leaves as and when required or pull up part of the clump for the small leek-like stems. Welsh onions should be used immediately as they do not store well once harvested.

Delivery charges are based on the distance you are from the garden centre and the amount you spend. The distance is calculated using your postcode district and our total area is divided into three ‘zones’ as detailed below. Your delivery charge is automatically calculated in your basket once you have entered your address details.

We aim to deliver your order as soon as we can and where possible this will be within 7 days, but this is not guaranteed. We will not notify you of delivery time as we are getting orders out as fast as we can. If you do need a confirmation of delivery date then please specify in the notes field when checking out. At this time we will only be delivering Monday-Friday but this will be subject to review.
Contactless Delivery process
Deliveries will be made to the front of your property only and left in a safe place. Our delivery drivers are not allowed to deliver your products by walking through your house, a side gate or to the back of your house / garden. If you live in an apartment block, we will leave the products at the main entrance and call you. Signatures are not required but the driver will knock on your door and retreat to a safe distance to make sure you are aware your goods have arrived. If the driver is unable to raise you then photographic evidence may be taken as proof of delivery.
Out of stocks
Products shown as available on our website should always be in stock with us but occasionally something may go out of stock due to multiple simultaneous orders. In this case a suitable substitute product may be provided. In any case where a suitable substitute product is unavailable a member of our sales team will contact you to discuss options.
