Commonly called Dogwood, Cornus are a group of deciduous trees and shrubs that offer year-round interest. Cornus are structurally beautiful trees that light up the garden with their striking flower bracts in early summer, or brightly-coloured stems that provide winter cheer with their firework colours.
Once the leaves have fallen in autumn, their true glory is the bright red, orange, yellow or acid green stems.
Some dogwoods have colourful young stems and can be pruned annually (‘coppiced’) to make the most of this feature. Great for winter gardens, plant en-masse to create a stunning display.
Growing & Care
Thrive in full sun.
Plant in soil that’s moist and well drained.
Ensure good spacing (50-60cm) for hedging to create a dense, colourful screen.
Water regularly during the first 1-2 years and during dry spells to prevent drought stress.
