Plant Of The Month- December 2025 – Helleborus

These beautiful winter flowering perennials are a stylish addition to any garden. With their evergreen foliage and delicate, nodding flowers, they will bring a touch of elegance to your outdoor space.

From deep purple to bright white, their early flowers are a welcome source of pollen and nectar to the early pollinators.

Easy to care for; just remove old leaf stems when they become tatty or marked and new ones will shoot from the base of the plant. They prefer well drained soil, but will thrive in low light and dappled shade conditions.

Plant Helleborus from Autumn until Spring as they will be less stressed, but avoid planting then during hot and dry weather.

Did you know?
Hellebore flowers can change color as they age, from white or pink to green. This is a normal part of the flower’s life cycle and is known as senescence
The green parts of the flower are sepals: leaf-like structures that protect the bud.
The sepals turn green as the flower ages, which may help the flower conduct more photosynthesis.

Birch

One of the most graceful of trees, Birch trees provide interest throughout the seasons. Their most popular feature is often their unusual bark, which comes to the fore in winter months. From dynamic white to chocolate brown, smooth or shaggy, there is a wide range of bark features available. It takes time for the bark colour to develop, but it is well worth the wait!
