A weeping shrub or small tree with oval, toothed, dark green leaves turning a beautiful yellow or red in autumn. Small, single flowers open pale pink from deep rosy-pink buds in March-April. Best grown in well-drained soil, in full sun to achieve the best flower display and autumn colour. Will tolerate most soil types including chalk and clay. Introduced by Collingwood Ingram in 1928 from the Heian-Jingu Temple at Kyoto.
