The potato vine Solanum ‘Aureovariegatum’ has slightly fragrant, white flowers with yellow centres, throughout mid to late summer. Its semi-evergreen leaves are gold and green and more delicate-looking, and it’s far less hardy. Grow Solanum ‘Aureovargatum’ in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered, sunny site, ideally in front of a south- or west-facing wall. Alternatively, grow it in pots, trained up an obelisk, which you can move indoors in autumn. It can also be grown as a conservatory or houseplant.
