Hellebores are stunning evergreen plants that are at their best in February. Breeders are continually striving to create ever more interesting colours to brighten up winter gardens. Resistant to pest and disease, Hellebores are extremely hardy and bounce back well after harsh weather. They are low maintenance too, simply trim old leaves away at the base as flower stems appear, mulch with compost and remove spent flowering stems in early summer.
Hellebores love to grow in a shady place, and companion plants include ferns, early spring bulbs such as crocus and snowdrops, and hardy cyclamen, creating a beautiful tapestry of interest when there is little else to enjoy in the garden.
